The Commission Process

Creating your timeless portrait, step by step

Commissioning a portrait is a meaningful journey that results in a work of art to be treasured for generations. From our first conversation to the final unveiling, I work closely with you to ensure the portrait captures not just likeness, but the essence and character of your subject.

The entire process typically takes 8-16 weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the portrait. Below is an overview of what to expect.

01

Initial Consultation

We begin with a conversation about your vision. Whether by phone, video call, or in person at the studio, we'll discuss:

  • Who will be portrayed and why this portrait is meaningful to you
  • The setting, mood, and overall feeling you envision
  • Size, medium (oil or charcoal), and framing preferences
  • Timeline and any special considerations
  • Budget and payment structure

This consultation is complimentary and carries no obligation.

02

Proposal & Agreement

Following our consultation, I'll prepare a detailed proposal that includes:

  • Portrait specifications (size, medium, framing)
  • Estimated timeline with key milestones
  • Investment amount and payment schedule
  • Terms and conditions

Once you approve the proposal, we'll sign a commission agreement and schedule the first photo session. A deposit is required at this time to reserve your place in the commission schedule.

03

Photo Reference Sessions

Capturing the right reference material is crucial. We'll schedule one or more photo sessions, either:

  • At my studio - The ideal setting with professional lighting
  • At your location - Your home or a meaningful place
  • On location - A special outdoor setting if desired

During the session, we'll experiment with different poses, expressions, and lighting until we find the perfect composition. Sessions are relaxed and enjoyable—I work to help subjects feel comfortable and natural.

Plan for 1-2 hours per session. Multiple sessions may be needed for complex compositions.

04

Compositional Studies

Before beginning the final portrait, I create preliminary studies to establish the composition, values, and overall design. You'll have the opportunity to review these studies and provide feedback, ensuring we're aligned on the direction before I commit to the final canvas or paper.

05

Creation

This is where the portrait truly comes to life. Working in my studio, I build the portrait through thousands of individual brushstrokes or charcoal marks, carefully developing form, light, and character.

For oil portraits, this involves:

  • Initial drawing and composition on canvas
  • Building the underpainting to establish values
  • Developing color and form through multiple painting sessions
  • Refining details and finishing touches

I'll share progress photos at key stages so you can follow along. While feedback is welcome during development, please trust the process—portraits often look quite different in the early stages than they will upon completion.

Oil portraits require drying time between sessions. Charcoal portraits are typically completed more quickly.

06

Review & Approval

Once the portrait is complete, you're invited to the studio for the first viewing. This is always a special moment. We'll review the portrait together, and I'll make any minor adjustments if needed.

Your satisfaction is paramount. If something doesn't feel quite right, we'll discuss it and I'll make reasonable revisions.

07

Framing & Delivery

Professional framing is essential for protecting and presenting your portrait. I work with master framers to ensure your portrait receives the highest quality frame that complements the work and your home.

Once framed, we'll arrange for either:

  • Studio pickup (ideal for local clients)
  • White-glove delivery and installation (for larger works)
  • Professional shipping (for distant clients)

I also provide guidance on proper placement, lighting, and care for your portrait.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a portrait cost?

Portrait commissions begin at $3,500 for charcoal works and $5,000 for oils. The final investment depends on size, complexity, number of subjects, and framing. I provide detailed pricing in the proposal after our initial consultation.

How long does the process take?

Most portraits are completed within 8-16 weeks from the date of commission. Larger or more complex works may require additional time. Rush commissions can sometimes be accommodated for an additional fee.

Can you work from photographs if travel isn't possible?

Yes, though in-person sessions are always preferred. If you're unable to travel to the studio, we can work from high-quality photographs. I'll provide detailed guidance on taking reference photos.

Do you paint children?

Absolutely. I've painted many portraits of children and have developed an approach that keeps sessions short and enjoyable. For very young children, I work primarily from photographs taken during a relaxed play session.

What's your payment structure?

I require a 50% deposit upon signing the commission agreement, with the balance due upon completion and approval. Payment plans can be arranged for larger commissions.

What if I need to cancel?

Life happens. Deposits are non-refundable once work has begun, but I'm always willing to work with clients facing unexpected circumstances. Please see the commission agreement for full details.
